Inspirational and practical Garden Design
Amanda Shipman
Thank you for looking at my website. I'm taking a short break at the moment, continuing to fulfil existing commissions but not taking on new projects. I'll be back again soon!

My inspiration comes from the world around me: nature, people, cityscapes, landscapes, architecture, sculpture and all that I see and experience.
I’m interested in creating gardens to balance the interplay between interior and exterior spaces and consequently improve the well-being of those who live there. My designs interpret the needs of my clients and considerations of the site to create stylish, outdoor living experiences.

How I became a garden designer
I have a life-long interest in gardens and how our outdoor environment can change the way we feel. As a child, we used to have gardening days when the whole family worked in the garden until it got dark, and feeling tired and satisfied at the end of the day, we shared a warming meal and reviewed our gardening progress. I was allowed to move paths to create new bed shapes and practise pruning with complete freedom! Later, I studied Graphic Design and Business Studies at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Newcastle University) followed by a career in television. When I settled down to family life, I had time to garden again. Building up my business by word of mouth, I started designing for friends and acquaintances in 1998.

Formal study at the Inchbald
After 9 years in business, I wanted to learn more and decided to raise my game. I studied the full-time Diploma in Garden Design at the Inchbald in 2007 - 2008, was awarded a Distinction, won the Anthony Paul Garden Design Award and had two mind-expanding placements – first with Martha Schwartz and then with Diarmuid Gavin. I entered and won an international competition and my design for a trade stand was exhibited at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2010.

Tutoring and lecturing
As a visiting studio tutor and part-time lecturer in Vectorworks, Garden and Planting Design, I taught for five years, teaching wonderful students at the Inchbald School of Design, City Lit and Capel Manor.

Speaking engagements
I am passionate about garden design and I'm pleased to share my enthusiasm as a guest speaker. Please call me regarding topics and availability.

Hobbies and interests
Hobbies include visiting gardens and historic houses, walking in the countryside, visits to the seaside, art, sculpture, travelling, eating, socialising, films, pilates and lindy-hop dancing. I am a Friend of the Society of Garden Designers and a life member of the National Trust.
